This newsletter I want to focus on leadership. In Inteo we have no hierarchy of power, such as gurus, bosses, saviours, or some motherly or fatherly figurehead. Although, many times people try to put members of our training team in such a position as they are still searching for a substitute parental figure to tell them how to think, what to believe and how to behave. We have no positions of power, but we do have levels of leadership, which are based upon experience with Inteo and one's own inner work. Such people naturally find themselves in a leadership role.
Yet, we are all leaders. If you inspire even one person, be it a child, or someone you meet in the street, you are leading. So Inteo is a process that awakens the leader inside of us. Not that people need to be led, but people are looking for inspiration to find that inner leader.
There are many forms of leadership from autocratic, democratic, inspiring, leading by example and so on. They range in motivation from highly inspirational to controlling by fear. The Inspired Leadership Program* that I sometimes run examines our unconscious need to control by fear, and by making that conscious, transforming it to leading by inspiration.
A valuable concept of leadership that many management programs use can be found in the two basic management theories that were researched by Douglas McGregor many years ago. Theory X and Theory Y. Both theories are the assumptions managers make towards the people they manage. It boils down to the idea that if you treat a person like an idiot, you train them to behave as an idiot, while they are in your company. At home they probably behave quite differently. It has been found that young children who are constantly treated this way end up believing that they are stupid and this can become a life script.
Napoleon said, "There are no bad soldiers, only bad officers."
Both theories assume certain definite qualities or attitudes towards people and they look like this:
Assumes that a Assumes that a
Person dislikes work - Person likes to work - for
Will avoid it altogether if possible economic & psychological reasons
Motivated by money or fear Mainly motivated by achievement,
recognition, and involvement.
Needs discipline and control Self-disciplined, Conscientious and dedicated
Needs supervision - can't be trusted Trustworthy and reliable.
Avoids responsibility Seeks responsibility and challenge
Lacks loyalty and commitment Loyal and committed
Lacks interest and creativity Interested in contributing ideas
Rebellious and competitive against authority Cooperative and supportive
If you were consistently treated like X - How would you behave?
If you were consistently treated like Y - How would you behave?
The research of McGregor suggests that managers tend to make assumptions about attitudes that they think people have, which fall into two broad categories. These are labelled theory X and theory Y and are shown above.
What you think is what you create. How do you see yourself X or Y?
In practice, most peoples' attitudes and behaviours are a mixture of X and Y, with Y predominating, unless external pressures move them in the direction of X.
Our attitudes most appear in our communicating style. X is not necessarily how you are, but your communication style does show indications of which category you may mostly be in.
X and Y are not absolutes, for they are opposite ends of a spectrum, with a variety of intermediate positions. Nevertheless, managers seem to fall broadly into one of the two groups - there are those who mainly seem to believe in theory X and those who mainly seem to believe in theory Y.
The first important observation is that both theories are self-fulfilling prophecies. If we make theory X assumptions about the attitudes and motivations of employees or the people that you lead and treat them accordingly, they will start to behave as if theory X is true. Their behaviour when observed reinforces our confidence in the validity of theory X, which in turn reinforces the theory X treatment of the employees, and the process takes one more turn into the spiral of increasing theory X behaviour until it is complete.
The aim of the Inspired Leadership Program is to turn organisations from X to Y through effective strong and supportive leadership. This is done by building people, their self esteem and their ability to be fully present with themselves (basis of Inteo). *The Inspired Leadership Program is a four day training for all levels of leadership.
With love
Colin P. Sisson

COMEDY CORNER
Who Listens?
First year of marriage: the man speaks, the woman listens.
Second year: the woman speaks, the man listens.
Third year: they both speak and the neighbors listen.
Second Opinion
Doctor to patient: "'You are very sick".
Patient: "Can I get a second opinion?".
Doctor: "Yes, you are very ugly too".
St. Patrick
Three Englishmen were in a bar and spotted an Irishman. So, one of the Englishmen walked over to the Irishman, tapped him on the shoulder, and said, "Hey, I hear your St. Patrick was a drunken loser."
"Oh really, hmm, didn't know that."
Puzzled, the Englishman walked back to his buddies. "I told him St. Patrick was a loser, and he didn't care." The second Englishman remarked, "You just don't know how to set him off. Watch and learn." So, the second Englishman walked over to the Irishman, tapped him on the shoulder and said, "Hey, I hear your St. Patrick was lying, cheating, idiotic, low-life scum!"
"Oh really, hmm, didn't know that."
Shocked beyond belief, the Englishman went back to his buddies. "You're right. He's unshakable!"
The third Englishman remarked, "Boys, I'll really tick him off. just watch." So the third Englishman walked over to the Irishman, tapped him on the shoulder and said, "I hear St. Patrick was an Englishman!"
"Yeah, that's what your buddies were trying to tell me."

Its hour is now - always

1st INTEO INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
Report

"TASTE OF LIFE"
Katy Rybackie near Gdansk, Poland
28-31 August 2008
It was a great conference, with many new insights for many people. It was particular exciting as it marked the major turning point from Breath Integration to Inteo. It was a chance for everyone to connect to their resistance to change. The main subjects that were covered were motivations and change. I think these featured more than the actual title of Taste of Life.
In Hot Topics many interesting and new ways of working with people were discussed. It was brought out into the open for discussion, the small band of Breath Integration Practitioners who have elected not to change over into Inteo and are spreading rumours that Inteo is dangerous. It was generally realised what people will do to justify their beliefs and point of view. I always feel sad when people make their resistance more important than awareness and greatly inspired when people consciously choose to taste their resistance. We saw this happening many times during the conference. It was a conference of courage and expansion.
I particularly enjoyed the game created by Grzegorz Pawlowski of the two tribes infused with their own unbendable traditions, but wanting desperately to get something from the other tribe from across the river. The difficulties of communication because of their own rules and it highlighted the challenges we all face today in communication and cooperation between people and nations.
The yearly debate - the battle between 'good and evil' was as usual full of hilarity and laugher. It was between the Freedom Square (the winner of the last two years and the new challenger, The Mystical Crystal. I personally felt that the Mystical Crystal had the best concept, but failed to exploit itself by not successfully presenting it. The audience could not finally decide who the victor was so it was made as a draw. We will have to wait for another year to when they meet again to finally decide the new champion. The debate is a very healthy way to laugh at ourselves and not to take Inteo too seriously. After all, Inteo is only a stepping stone into higher consciousness. It is not the way! It is not the message. It is only the messenger, the tool that we use to explore and discover all that we are.
There were many mini seminars conducted by the world's leaders and Practitioners of Inteo and everyone of them had some magical treasure from bodywork, movement and work with the Inteo process itself. Thank you to all the presenters and to all those who attended who brought their special energy that made everything work. This year, Poland, Norway, New Zealand and Finland were represented.
